Grants between $500 to $5,000 are awarded twice a year, in Winter and Summer.  To date, the Foundation has returned to the community over $150,000.  More recent projects funded include:

  • Earth Squad BizKidz – In partnership with CHEARS’ Earth Squad program, this project will introduce 15-20 Greenbelt West boys and girls ages 6-12 to cooperative living and working. Kids will plan and operate their own co-op businesses around town. These hands-on activities will be combined with weekly after school business management meetings, workshops and field trips that will help them learn about nutrition, local food systems, sustainable transportation, coops, dynamic governance, entrepreneurship, and finance.

  • Establishment of Greenbelt Visitor and Education Center at the Greenbelt Museum – The Friends of the Greenbelt Museum will provide pivotal resources to increase visitor education and programming as part of the Museum expansion. This will allow the Museum to increase its program offerings, to be a starting point for those wanting to explore the city, to expand its archives, and much more.
  • The Greenbelt Hoarding Task Force Demonstration Project – Greenbelt Homes Inc. in partnership with the City of Greenbelt – Greenbelt CARES are launching a new pilot initiative to develop solutions and support for hoarding among GHI residents. This initiative may serve as a model for Prince George’s County and will create a hoarding task force, a monthly support group, a resource brochure and 10 mini-grants for counseling individual residents.
  • Greenbelt Elementary School PTA – Counseling Materials and Supplies – A new initiative to provide social skills training using innovative computer based technology with students on the Autism spectrum.  They will seek new materials such as games and activities, to provide counseling to students with emotional and behavioral difficulties.
  • Friends of the Greenbelt Movie Theatre – Building Bridges: Creating Community Thru Cinema – Develop a 10-part movie series that highlights past partnerships between GCF and Greenbelt community organization

  • Greenbelt Middle School – Literacy Committee – GMS Art, Literature, and Leadership Initiative. This initiative will focus upon youth empowerment thru character education and public speaking by establishing a student service leadership program enabling students to serve and support their community and obtain community service hours.
  • Greenbelt MakerSpace – Maker Workshop Expansion – The project will expand MakerSpace’s traditional wood workshop by purchasing equipment and teaching 2D and 3D computer design to both youth and adults. As part of the project, they will use recycled plastic to make filaments for the 3D printer.
  • The Greenbelt News Review’s project is to rethink and redesign the paper’s online presence. This incudes a design document, implementation plan, and mockups for a sustainable and extensible electronic News Review that compliments, but does not replace, traditional print.
  • The Greenbelt Co-operative Incubator’s mission is to support the creation of new co-ops in Greenbelt. This project intends to obtain professional help to write by-laws and incorporate the group’s six current new co-ops: Franklin Park Daycare/Preschool Co-op; a Compost Co-op; Movie Theater Co-op; Kids Co-op; Thrift Store Co-op; and Healthy Eco-Yards Co-op. The project will also provide technical assistance with start-up activities for the co-ops.
  • Greenbelt Lady Angels Association project will promote continuity in the Greenbelt West Community through basketball games, peer mentoring of girls, and community advocacy.
  • Three Sisters: Gardens for All Seasons: Chesapeake Education, Arts and Research Society (CHEARS) in partnership with Alight Dance Theater will guide audiences through an active exploration of the Three Sisters Demonstration Gardens.  A performance will be held at each garden located in the three different Greenbelt locations.
